Closely connected to the lives of real students, Nicky has fought for free tuition, low cost bus passes and affordable housing. Nicky has also taught thousands of community college students how to be effective citizen advocates!
Nicky voted for COLA increases of 17% over the past two years, to protect the vacation hours of classified workers, to adopt full health benefits for part time faculty and worked relentlessly to protect the hard-earned health benefits of retired Peralta workers.
Equal pay for equal work!! Nicky was the leading voice in the Board adoption of a ground-breaking pay parity contract for part-time faculty, the first district in the state to do this!
Successful management of the Covid crisis, full Accreditation Status, Financial reforms with a strong ending balance, and Administrative Consolidation to put $500,000 Back into Classrooms and Student Services
Peralta’s Board of Trustees is now a model of respectful and principled representation of the public interest. Nicky has played a key role throughout this long transformative process.
Nicky’s relentless advocacy led the Board to agree to reform Peralta’s budgeting processes, conforming both to Board Policy and to the “10+1” collegial consultation requirements of state law (AB 1725). Reforms are now under development by Peralta’s Faculty Senate!
From the classroom to the Board room, Nicky has an impressive record of scoring wins in the struggle to eliminate racism and create an open and just society. He currently chairs the BIPOC committee of the statewide Faculty Association of the California Community Colleges (FACCC).
Nicky has been the board leader in its adoption of a progressive environmental sustainability policy, divesting Peralta funds from carbon-intensive investments, and incorporating environmental sustainability into Peralta’s mission statement!
